winter wuwWHAT I’M READING

Almost done with my re-read of Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, and it’s just as lovely as I remember it. I picked it for book club, and my friends are reporting that they love it. Of course! Why wouldn’t they? I’ll see what the rest of book club says next week. :) At the suggestion of Bridgid Gallagher, I picked up Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas from the library. She sold me as soon as she said it’s about an assassin. I’m excited to start it when I finish Seraphina. Anyone else read it? What did you think?

WHAT I’M WRITING

Still click-clacking away on my revisions! This weekend I got sick and while I continued to hack away at the manuscript, I was feeling pretty uninspired. But now I’m feeling better and the muse is back. I have NINE chapters left! Ahhhhh! Home stretch, y’all! Of course, these chapters are largely summarized or dialogue-only, so I have a lot of work still left to do. But still. I’m also done with this round of revisions! What!

WHAT INSPIRES ME

Are y’all ready for some Kpop overload? Hah! I’ll try to avoid that, but there’s just so much good stuff out there. I’ll keep it to my favorites.

T.O.P’s song “Doom Dada” is my go-to for getting into the creative mindset. The video’s kinda cracked out, but that’s the point. (Check this video out if you’d like an explanation, starting at the 5:23 mark. Pretty brilliant stuff.)

Next up is T.O.P’s AWESOME hip hop song with his BigBang band mate G-Dragon. This was the song that solidified my love for Kpop. And Turbo loves dancing to this song. As soon as he hears it, he starts doing the diaper bump. So freaking cute.

Third is the song that got me interested in Kpop in the first place! Junhyung, the rapper for the group Beast, is the star of the second Kdrama I watched, Monstar. This boy is a quadruple threat! He can act, dance, sing, and rap. I love love love this song, and the whole album is reminiscent of late 90s R&B. Good stuff, y’all.

Can’t forget the ladies! 2ne1 is kinda crazy and that’s why I love them. This video features guns, straight jackets, and fierce clothing, and it’s called “I Am the Best.” Nuff said!

EXO are new and taking the Asian music scene by storm! “Growl” is my second favorite by them (“Machine” usurped it as #1 last night. THE DANCING!!! Kai is a beast.) and their most famous. This video was filmed in one-shot and its simplicity combined with the choreography make it genius.

And last goes to my new favorites, the band Led apple. Rock bands are pretty rare in the Korean music industry, so this indie rock loving girl was delighted to stumble upon these guys. (Thanks to a member of my Kpop facebook group! Yes, I’m in a group devoted solely to discussing Kpop. ^_^) The lead singer, Hanbyul, has some serious pipes. They’re doing this Music Note series where they cover a famous pop song every week, and his version of Imagine Dragons’ “Demons” is simply incredible. This is their newest single and it infuses my entire body with joy. These guys also preform with a lot of heart which I love and appreciate.

(If you want to skip all the intro, start at 0:45.)

WHAT ELSE I’M UP TO

My giveaway ended last night! And the winner is …

winner

Lucky number 5, who is Stephanie Scott. Congrats Stephanie! I’ll mail you my copy as soon as it arrives. (Seriously, Amazon? Don’t you know what the point of pre-ordering is??)

I finally found the Girl Scouts on Monday, and have adopted two boxes of Thin Mints. I promise to give them a good home–in my freezer, and later in my belly. Om nom nom.

How is your week? I hope fabulous!

  1. Thanks to SecondBorn, I’ve heard of all of these bands/artists, and I can even say I know some of these songs just by the title. SecondBorn actually runs her own Facebook Kpop fan page, and has a respectable following. Let me know if you want any recommendations, Kris. Her knowledge of K-Pop/C-Pop/J-Pop, and the whole culture is quite encyclopedic.

So, do you prefer EXO-M or EXO-K? :D

I hope you’re feeling better, and the revision work goes smoothly for you this week! :)

    • I prefer when they’re all together. :) But if I have to choose, then EXO-K because I just love the sound of Korean. Plus, they have Kai and that kid kills me with his dancing. But Tao is in EXO-M and his martial arts skills rival Kai’s dancing.
      Which do you prefer?
Thanks for the heads up about Secondborn! I’ll check her out!

  2. You should check out FTIsland, CNBlue, Lunafly, and Royal Pirates if you like LEDApple. Hanbyul (the leader of LEDApple) also has a little Youtube series on their official Youtube (steroyal) or you can search ‘Hanbyul’s Blah Blah’.

I would also suggest B1A4, they’re really fun and quirky, and SHINee, they’re label mates with EXO. I personally love U-KISS, and B2ST (Flower is by B2ST’s rapper). U-KISS generally does dance type music.

As for girls… I would suggest Domino Game by Kiss&Cry, Younha, Ailee (solo artists), f(x), and SNSD. SNSD and f(x) are label mates with EXO as well.

There are a whole bunch more that I would suggest, but that would be a very long comment. XD

Relating to the songs you shared, GD’s Coup D’etat is good too.
2NE1’s It Hurts is my personal favourite of theirs.
EXO’s Heart Attack, Baby Don’t Cry, and Back Pearl are AMAZING (I suggest EXO-M versions)
And if you like the dancing…

Welcome to K-Pop, please enjoy your stay. ;D

    • I checked out CNBlue a few months ago and didn’t love what I heard, but I’ll dig deeper this time. I like SHINee, especially “Sherlock” although I can’t handle the official M/V after Eat Your Kimchi’s video about it. I prefer the dance only-video (but not the dance practice one). SM has the best choreographers.
Thanks for the other suggestions! Always looking to broaden my knowledge of Kpop.

  3. That was some serious K-Pop. I think youtube alone is pretty inspiring when you think about it. Here we are in two different US states almost 1000 miles away from each other, sharing Korean pop music. The world is so small and accessible now! It’s a good time to be an artist.

    • I’ve thought about that so many times. I love it! Back before YouTube, Pandora, Spotify, etc., when I was in high school, I was pretty limited to what music I was exposed to. Thank goodness for the internet, since that’s how I find all of my favorite stuff these days.

  4. My dearest, oldest friend of over 28 years has that 2NE1 song in her Zumba classes. She says the lyrics are talking about how the singer thinks she’s so much better than everyone else.

I”m pretty boring and outdated with my own musical preferences, though I’ve loved Indian music since I discovered the sounds of the sitar at age thirteen.

    • I figured it was something like that, given the title. The English is rather telling too. (There’s a line that ends with, “million dollar baby.”) But honestly, not understanding the lyrics is part of the appeal. It all melts into music when I don’t know the language.

  5. KPOP YAY! Thanks for sharing. WOO! Loving it :D The videos are so addictive! I’m still a huge Girls Generation fan.

I wasn’t a fan of Throne of Glass, but I am in the minority with my opinion. I really hope you enjoy it!

  6. Well, that was more KPOP that I’ve ever encountered in one place for sure. Performances were pretty good, all in all, but I don’t see anything original. Knocking off MJ, Bollywood and any Boy Band you care to name may make for good dance music and fun listening but not even a moniker like LED Apple means you’re adding to the world library of significant music. I’m not hating, like I said, fun music, plenty of pop in the ever-weirder videos and great synchronization in flailing movements. I give them a B for overall video enjoyment, an A+ in everybody on the screen looking alike and C for musical creativity.

  7. nothing like getting sick to drive the inspiration away. Hope you’re feeling better and can get back to it soon. I really enjoy the Throne of Glass series. I recently learned the author sold another three books to add to it, to total of six! Not sure how I feel about that. I’m not sure I can wait another three years to see how it all ends!

    • Oh wow! If I like it, I’ll certainly have plenty to keep me busy. And it’ll be nice not to have to say goodbye to characters I love after only three books. There’s an idea! ;)

  8. THRONE OF GLASS and its sequel are two of my most favourite books. They are so, so good! And the best part is that Sarah J. Maas has been given the go-ahead for books 4, 5, and 6 (after the third comes out sometime this year). So excited! I really enjoyed SERAPHINA too, though I wish the sequel wasn’t taking so long to come out.

Good luck with the home stretch of your story! :-)

  9. Yay for nearing the end of your revision! I’m getting close to the same place and I’m so anxious to call this round done. Best of luck getting through yours — I’m rooting you on! Also, I’ve managed to secure a few boxes of Girl Scout cookies too. So yummy!

  10. I love THRONE OF GLASS and thought the sequel was even better! I’m so glad Bridgid recommended it to you! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I haven’t read SERAPHINA yet, but it’s sitting on my e-reader waiting for me. Good luck on the home stretch of your revisions!

  11. Welp, I feel old. I’d never heard of kpop or any of these songs. But I listened to a couple of them and I can see how they’d be great for motivation! Especially since I can’t understand what they’re saying so you’ve got the good beat but not the distraction of words. I, too, secured some GS cookies. I bought five boxes from a co-worker … but only four made it home! The other one has been keeping me company in my office. It’s gooooood company!

  12. You belong to a KPOP FB group? Of course you do! :D (That made my day, btw.)

I hope you like THRONE OF GLASS! I thought of another female assassin book/series: Have you read GRACELING by Kristin Cashore? (link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3236307-graceling?from_search=true)The writing is fantastic (fantasy), and the MC is a kick-butt female assassin. Anyhow – another book you HAVE to read! :)

SERAPHINA is on my TBR list, thanks to you. I’m glad to hear that your reading group is enjoying it!

    Have a great week, Kris!
